2006: Another Successful Season

The Marshall Point Lighthouse Committee is pleased to report another successful season. Despite the lengthy closure of the Marshall Point Road this summer, over 13,200 visitors found their way to the museum and lighthouse.

In addition to being a tourist favorite, the lighthouse continues to enjoy popularity as a location for many advertisers. This summer the lighthouse, Lighthousealong with some familiar faces and places, appeared in several-page spreads in both Shape and Vogue magazines. BMW arrived on July 4th to photograph a brand new vehicle in our picturesque setting.

Tour goers arrived by land and sea. Six cruise ships visited Port Clyde Harbor and the passengers were shuttled to the museum. We also enjoyed more bus tours throughout the summer, which included hosting five buses on our last day of the season!

New Displays for 2007

As we enter the seventeenth season at the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum, our displays continue to grow and expand. If it has been a while since you have visited us, why not drop in some afternoon this summer?

This year, a detailed scale model of the coal carrying steamship S. S. Polias will be added to the boat collection. This vessel ran aground in a storm in 1920 on the Old Cilley Ledge off Marshall Point, with the loss of eleven crew members. Uniquely constructed, with a hull made of concrete, the ship rested on the ledge for a number of years before it broke up in another winter storm. Our model was made by Jerome Morris of Union.

A digital copy of pages of the log kept by Marshall Point lighthouse keepers has become part of our library of reference material. Copied from the original documents in the National Archives in Washington, DC, these fourteen volumes detail the daily activity of the keeper and his family - most mundane, some exciting and all of it interesting.

The famous Port Clyde fisherman's doll will join us this summer at Marshall Point. A project of the Ladies of the Port Clyde Baptist Church, the doll is celebrating its thirtieth birthday. We will have an example of the current doll and pictures of past examples.

In Memoriam

Our community lost one of its finest with the passing of Dana Dana SmithSmith on March 5, 2007. Dana was one of the founding members of the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum Committee and has worked tirelessly with the committee since the mid-1980's. He served as the Museum Director for most of his time on the committee and maintained all of the exhibits on display. Each year he tried to introduce something new to show our visitors. He created our famous lobster buoy exhibit, which contains miniature buoys painted in the colors of local lobstermen. Dana also created several historical binders with pictures and information about the lighthouse, our town and its people.

Rarely does a person do so much yet shy away from the spotlight as Dana did. Those of us fortunate to work alongside him have been enriched by his friendship. We will miss him dearly. .

Three Scholarships Awarded to Local Students

The Marshall Point Lighthouse continued to offer scholarship programs to all Saint George students who complete their high school requirements. The program is available to high school, technical school, private school, and home school students. Seven Thousand Dollars has been granted over two years of the program.

2006 Scholarship Winners: Richard Philbrook, Freya Levett, & Amanda ChontosThe 2006 recipients from Georges Valley H.S. were Freya Levett and Amanda Chontos, both of Tenants Harbor; each received a $2000 award. Freya is attending Connecticut College; Amanda, the University of Maine, Orono. A third scholarship of $1000 was awarded to Richard Philbrook of St. George. Richard is attending the Mid-Coast School of Technology pursuing a career in transportation.

Scholarships are made possible through private funds and are open to qualified students in the Spring of 2007. Applicants provide a record of their academic achievements and must demonstrate civic leadership and financial need.

Gift Shop News

The gift shop had another good season. The new jewelry, ornaments, and t-shirt design were good sellers. A new postcard of our own buoy display was a hit.

Local artists are welcome to display their original lighthouse artwork in our gift shop. Three pieces were sold this past season.

We were happy to have Lorraine Hupper and Dolly McReynolds join us on the shop committee. We would like to extend a thank you to all those who volunteered in the gift shop. Great job!

The proceeds from the gift shop helps to maintain the lighthouse and museum.

Where Are You From?

Invariably that is one of the first questions a Marshall Point Museum volunteer will ask a visitor and the answer could be from any one of the 50 states or, for that matter, any part of the world. As one of the many volunteers that spend a 4 hour shift in the museum, you will represent the town to this array of visitors. Sometimes you could be answering their questions, such as directions to a recommended restaurant or explaining some aspects of the lobster business. With most of the 13,000 visitors coming through the door in 2006 from June to the end of September, a volunteer is certainly kept busy. Won't you join us as a volunteer at our beautiful location? We sincerely thank those who have taken the time to serve at the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum through the years, making this one of the most sought out destinations in the Mid-Coast area.
