Some excerpts from the May 2006 Newsletter

SLOW START TO 2005 SEASON

If any records were broken in 2005, it would likely have been for "least amount of visitors in one day." The season got off to a slow start, a direct result of the exceedingly wet weather we had in May. Despite the slow start, the season ended strong with over 12, 820 people visiting the museum.

For the first time, volunteers welcomed visitors from four cruise ships that came to Port Clyde in July and August. After the last cruise ship visit, the Trip Coordinator told the MPLH chairmanPhoto of west side of keeper's house and the lighthouse. that the passengers felt Port Clyde and the lighthouse were the highlights of their cruise!

The Lighthouse was a popular setting for several photo shoots again this year. Both Nordstroms and LL Bean shot layouts for spring and summer catalogs. In addition, the Maine Dept of Tourism filmed a scene for a commercial. This commercial will be shown mostly nationwide to lure vacationers to our state.

In November, Marshall Point joined other local businesses by celebrating Yuletide in St. George. The participating businesses from Spruce Head to Port Clyde opened their doors on the two days following Thanksgiving. Lighthouse committee members and volunteers prepared snacks and staffed the museum. It was a highly successful event and it gave us a chance to see many friends and neighbors at the lighthouse. Several locals came with friends and family to begin their Christmas Shopping and enjoy the festivities.

Local Residents Receive Scholarships

In our continued quest to support the community, the MPLH Museum Committee offered two scholarships to St. George Residents last spring. The first scholarship recipients were Mariah Cunningham and Dennis Post, both 2005 graduates of Georges Valley High School. Mariah and Dennis have com pleted their first year at the University of Maine Orono and Embry Riddle University, respectively.

This year, the committee will once again offer scholarships to two graduating seniors in an accredited high school, private school, or home school program. The student must be accepted to a two or four-year college, university, or vocational school.

The committee is also pleased to announce our first non-traditional scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior in an accredited high school, private school, or home school program who will be starting a career in a particular trade after graduation. The scholarship money will be used for training or further education needed to get started on this new career path.

Applications were due by May 1, 2006 and the winners will be announced on June 5th.

Borman Grant Renewed

The Marshall Point Lighthouse Committee is pleased to be the recipient of another $5000 grant from the Borman Family Foundation. This generous gift is being used in a joint project with the Town of St. George and the St. George Historical Society to preserve many of our town's historical documents. Leatrice and Lorraine Falla have done an impressive job cataloging the different items and storing everything in archival storage containers.

The additional money will allow this ongoing project to continue, with the added hope that someday this collection can be transferred to microfilm. This has been a wonderful gift to the entire Town of St. George. We are thankful to the Borman Family for helping our town preserve its rich history.

The continuation of the Borman Grant will ensure our town's history is available to future generations.

Volunteer Update

Last season, the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum Committee advertised that we needed volunteers. Over twenty local residents answered ourcall for help and volunteered at the museum. The committee members were both impressed and grateful. We look forward to working with these new volunteers again this year!

The museum committee is always accepting new volunteers and have openings available anytime from May through October While most of our volunteers are able to work during July and August, we experience shartages in early June and from Labor Day through Columbus Day. Training is provided and new volunteers normally work alongside experienced docents for the first shift or two.
