Visitor Record in 2004

The local papers reported a downturn in the number of Midcoast visitors last summer, but the Marshall Point Lighthouse enjoyed another record breaking year. We welcomed over 14,400 people in 2004—an increase of more than 1,200 visitors.

The number of tour groups also increased. Last year we opened the museum to two Elderhostel tours from Tanglewood, and three different tours provided by the Lighthouse Depot of Wells, Maine. In June, we had the pleasure of meeting the NELL (New England Lighthouse Lovers) Group. It's hard to say who enjoyed this visit more—the NELL group or the volunteers. Each learned many things that day and it felt like welcoming old friends.

Among the many photo shoots at Marshall Point this year, two in particular stand out. One was a fashion shoot for a Danish clothing catalog. The models posed along the walkway and on the front porch wearing their winter wardrobes on a brilliant afternoon in May. The second shoot was for an Iams Dog Food Advertisement, featuring 9 different breeds of puppies. The dogs enjoyed frolicking around the grounds much to the delight of onlookers.

It was a fun and productive year and we believe 2005 will be another record breaking season!

Grant Received to Preserve Our Town's History

The Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum Committee became the proud recipients of a $5,000 grant from the Borman Family Foundation of Oakland, Maine. The money from this grant is to be used to catalog and preserve historical documents in the possession of the St. George Historical Society and the Town of St. George.

Dana Smith and Bob Ensor from the Marshall Point Lighthouse Committee met with Jim Skoglund and John Falla of the St. George Historical Society and discussed ways to begin this immense project. They contacted Ann Small, an Archivist with the Maine State Museum, and met with her to learn more about the proper storage of historical documents. A laptop computer and several archival-type storage items were purchased.

The joint committee then set about finding the right person to research the many documents and catalog each one. Sisters, Lorraine and Leatrice Falla, have been hired to perform these important tasks.

The Marshall Point Lighthouse Committee feels strongly that this project is crucial to safeguarding our town's rich history. We are pleased to announce that the Lighthouse Committee has voted to contribute an additional $5000 to this significant project.

JOIN US

The Lighthouse Awaits YouOur many excited volunteers wonder why there aren't more people waiting to join our group. The museum always has a need for more volunteers! What better way to spend a morning or afternoon than talking with visitors from afar while enjoying the breathtaking vista from the Lighthouse Museum? Need to be an expert in Lighthouse trivia? No! An interest in the site and town history is a help, but there is no test. We usually ask volunteers to welcome visitors at the Lighthouse in half-day shifts throughout the summer. We are very flexible, and will work with your schedule. It is a lot of fun, and a great way to learn about the Lighthouse and the area, while meeting interesting people from all over the world. All training is provided.

Come talk with us—we would love to welcome you to our group. Please contact Jim Quinn (594-7389) or Dave Percival (372-6438) to sign up today!

New ExhibitsThe following items have been added to the Marshall Point Lighthouse Collection. Please visit us this summer and see them!

  • Tom Hocking has given the museum the originals of the many pictures taken at the Clark Island Quarry in 1926 and 1932.

  • We have also acquired prints from the Maine Preservation Commission's collection of stereoscopic slides. Most, but not all, are of the Clark Island Quarry and were taken in 1873.

  • Copies of Charles Skinner's logs, covering his 45 years of service as keeper at Marshall Point, have been obtained from the National Archives. They will be put in binders and made part of our album collection. We are hoping to do the same for Charles Allen, keeper during the 1930's and 1940's.
