Some excerpts from the 2003 Newsletter

Record Attendance in ’02; More Parking in ’03

By car, by bus and bike, by kayak and camper… on they came, a record number of visitors between May and October of 2002. Signing our guest book: 13,344 people, surpassing 1999’s previous high by over 300.

We estimate that for every signature, there was a person who did not sign. All states except N. Dakota were represented, along with Canada, most European Union nations; plus, Japan, China, Australia, and several Central and South American countries.

PARKING TO EXPAND

Photo of parking lot[Ed note. This news is from the Newsletter released some time ago. The parking area is now a reality and may not correspond exactly as this Newsletter item indicates.] We did have several days of gridlock, and many days of crowded traffic conditions. So, as Step One, the Lighthouse Committee approved a ten-space expansion of the lower parking lot, as outlined by Treby Johnson.

As Step Two, in future years, the Town of St. George’s Planning Board has asked us to route the traffic to the right, along a one-way drive up to the upper parking lot, exiting down the ramp at left. Thanks to your generosity we had funds on hand to defer the cost of Step One, and also to repair mechanical systems of the keeper’s house.

KEEPER’S KITCHEN COOKBOOK -- BACK WITH NEW (and old) RECIPES

Photo of volunteers with CookbookThe immensely popular Lighthouse cookbook of 1994 is re-emerging in the coming season. It has been updated, and some new recipes have been added. The original art remains, including the chapter headings with sketches by St. George artists. The new cover photo is by Don Moore.

Grethe Goodwin (left) and Jan Smith collaborated on the redesigned volume which will sell for $10 at the Museum Gift Shop. From Richmond,Virginia, Jan is the newest member of the committee.

2002 'Happenings'

Museum

Director Dana Smith has increased to 50 the number of albums on hand containing historical photos and documents. Dana, Lighthouse Committee Chair David Percival, and Malcolm Wiley also are working with the Town of St. George's Bi-Centennial planners Summer events will celebrate the town's 200th birthday. And the Lighthouse committee voted a substantial sum from gift sale proceeds to supply bicentennial flags for the festivities.

Brand New

Thanks to the efforts of volunteer Alan Pease, and committeeman John Snow, we now Our Web Site have our very own website: www.marshallpoint.org. The site contains glorious photos of the Lighthouse and grounds. There are maps and driving directions to guide our visitors. Hours are posted along with Marshall Point history, and even this newsletter if the gods of bytes and bits smile on us.

Comings &
Comments

As mentioned on Page One, we had a record number of visitors last year. Class trips and class reunions; honeymooners; brides and grooms exchanging vows; and two dozen Corvette owners who 'gunned up' in their cars while rallying on the Midcoast. But they might have been upstaged by a dozen female cyclists who 'pedaled up' later ….none younger than 75, the oldest 80! Reviewing the 'Comments' section of the Visitors Guest Book we find a teenager noting: "I had a "super duper Fun Attack" here.. (Good news). An adult (presumably) wrote "Marshall Point is my most favorite site in the universe"… (must really get around). And a landlubber (presumably) asked, "Where does the water go at low tide?" The keeper on duty that day did not record her reply.

Volunteers

We now have a roster of 80 keepers who cheerfully deal with visitors and their questions. Flo Jones has volunteered to direct hospitality at our summer picnic and December Open House.
